Art & Antiques on Sanibel & Captiva? Certainly. The islands have long been a haven for artists; an abundance of island galleries reflect that. But savvy shoppers will also discover antiques and heirloom jewelry, on both islands.

The best part is many of your favorite purchases will fit right in your bag for the trip home. (The ones that don't can easily be shipped). For inspiration before you shop, we suggest a visit to the Sanibel Historic Village, filled to the brim with artifacts telling the story of the island.

It's not uncommon to find antiques mingling with art, and island shoppers will have a wonderful time discovering the "finds" that will later bring back memories of Sanibel and Captiva. Most galleries can be found along Periwinkle Way, Tarpon Bay Road and Palm Ridge Road on Sanibel. There are diverse, excellent galleries in Captiva's village as well, showcasing everything from modern to wildlife.

Art lovers should keep a keen eye out for works in

banks and local restaurants as well. Many work hand in hand with local galleries and have constantly-changing artwork. The painting hanging right over your table, the one that's been calling out to you all evening, may very well be for sale.

Artists are inspired by the islands - who isn't? - and you'll enjoy their many exciting interpretations of island landmarks, such as the lighthouse, shellers on the beach and Captiva's Chapel by the Sea. Some galleries focus on locally relevant artwork, while others offer an eclectic mix of bold and different.

Want to try your own hand? Drop in at Barrier Island Group for the Arts (B.I.G. Arts) on Dunlop Road and check out which classes you might join. Pottery, cartooning, painting and more await you. There's also a terrific gallery at B.I.G. Arts. Enjoy!
