J.N. 'Ding' Darling National Wildlife Refuge; Sanibel Island, Florida

Ding Darling

J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is a 5,000+ acre sanctuary that offers hiking, biking, canoe trails and fabulous opportunities for birders and photographers. You can also take a naturalist-led tram tour of the refuge originating at Tarpon Bay.

More than 200 species of birds nest here, many of them threatened or endangered. Mornings and evenings are particularly good times to spot birds, when they're feeding. Alligators, turtles, river otters, armadillos and many other creatures may be spotted as well. WE RECOMMEND YOU BRING BINOCULARS so you don't miss out on something exciting!

The beautiful Education Center has a plethora of information, guides, restroom facilities, an observation tower and canoe rentals.

The Wildlife Drive entrance is located in the Education Center parking lot. Entrance fees are $5 per vehicle and $1 per walker/biker over 15 years. Entrance passes such as the Golden Age, Golden Eagle, Golden Access, Refuge Annual, and current year's Federal Duck Stamp are accepted and may be purchased at the entrance gate or in the Education Center.
