Need a break from the beach? There are some amazingly diverse things to see and do, all just a short day trip from Sanibel and Captiva Islands.

The Florida Everglades, known as the “River of Grass”, is less than two hours away. This mysterious and intriguing environment is something every Florida visitor should see. Naturalist-led tours are available, or explore on your own. Take an airboat ride, see where alligators raise their young, stop by an Indian reservation or a museum. You may even run into a famous Mullet Festival if you’re lucky.

Closer to Sanibel and Captiva, families really enjoy a tour of The Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Estates in Ft. Myers. The story of these inventive men, who were friends and neighbors, combined with the breathtaking gardens makes for an entertaining morning or afternoon.

Like sports? The Skatium Complex in Fort Myers offers inline skating, while Germain Arena – home to professional hockey team the Florida Everblades, also has public ice and inline skating. Visitors with good timing will also have access to baseball games at Spring Training facilities of the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox. The Fort Myers Miracle also plays at the Lee County Sports complex.

Nearby Bonita Springs has professional dog-racing; several gambling cruises are also based in the area.
