Island Happenings |
For those of you lucky enough to be on the islands in April there are some fun special events coming up!
Earth Day Celebration
Sponsored by the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), get ready to enjoy exhibits, attractions, food and
music in "celebration of our natural world". This event takes place on Sunday, April 16 all over Sanibel with
different activities at the SCCF, 'Ding' Darling Wildlife Refuge, Tarpon Bay Explorers and the Bailey-Matthews Shell
Museum. The best part is all activities are free!
Taste of the Islands
Bring a blanket and your appetite to the 25th Annual Taste of the Islands festival. Some of the island's most
popular restaurants compete for awards and serve up their famous dishes to benefit the Clinic for the Rehabilitation
of Wildlife (CROW).
Taste of the Islands will be from noon to 6pm on Sunday, April 24 at the Periwinkle City Park and Community Center on
Sanibel Island.
New and exciting events are planned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this kick-back-and-relax day filled with
food, music and games for all ages.
Don't forget to cast your vote for the 'People's Choice' Award!
From the Forum
Last August we added an interactive Message Forum to our website. It has become a
VERY popular section - many folks wake up to it daily, logging on to see what's new in their favorite vacation spot
and taking a little armchair trip to the islands over coffee. Come 'Dream' with us at
BestofSanibelCaptiva.com!
A wonderful quote from a very satisfied visitor!
"...people who visit for the first time will see the beauty, the
sunrises/sunsets, the food, the shops, the peace & the kind and wonderful people of Sanibel & Captiva (and) won't be
dissapointed and the feelings of relaxation in the safe & cradled arms of the islands will stay forever in their minds."
It's Almost Turtle Time!
From May 1 through October 31 is sea turtle nesting season. There are two types of
turtles that nest on Sanibel and Captiva; the Loggerhead, which is a threatened species and the endangered Green.
Every year the females return to the same beach they hatched from to lay between 50 and 175 eggs. Aproximately 55 - 60
days later the hatchlings dig their way out of the nest and head to the Gulf.
SCCF has provided guidelines for all of us who visit and live on the islands: Please keep lights near the beach off
or shielded, including closing your drapes. Artificial lighting disorients the babies and they wander to the light
and away from the water. Pick up toys and chairs on the beach and fill in any holes you may have dug so adults and
hatchlings don't become entangled or trapped. Lastly, please pick up any plastic or styrofoam you see in the water or
on the beach as this is frequently mistaken for food.
All of us together can help make this a successful season.
If you are on the beach in the early morning hours and see a white jeep marked 'Turtle Patrol' stopped, be sure to
wander over and watch. They are most likely marking a nest or digging it up to protect it. If the nest is dug up,
the hatchlings are released from the same beach.
Turtle Fun Fact!:
The sex of the hatchlings is determined by the temperature of the nest - a warmer nest produces all males, a cooler
nest produces all females.
